When Kurt and Christi Ohlenbusch bought their first home in Fair Haven nine years ago, they were newlyweds who only needed space for two.

Then their daughter Madison came along — now 6 years old — and their needs began to change. They dreamed of a playroom for her and considered that one day, their parents might need to live with them.

“Both my mom and his parents are getting older, and we thought, well, maybe we should try to have space in case they need to move in,” says Christi, an account manager for the American Heart Association.

Their first home came about in an unusual way. While researching wedding venues, they visited a local community with parks, trails, and easy access to the shore. They didn’t get married there, but they decided it was the perfect place to start their life together and built a custom 3,000-square-foot home.

After nine years, though, they wanted more — especially a larger home with a swimming pool.

“That’s what kicked it off,” Kurt says. The couple began looking for other homes nearby.

Timing Is Everything

They found their dream home — before they were ready to sell their current one.

“We found a house, but we hadn’t done any preparation for selling,” Kurt says. They made an offer, but were two days too late; the seller had already accepted another.

The experience was a wake-up call. Coordinating the sale of one home and the purchase of another could be complicated, and the risk of delays was real.

“We had one neighbor that took nine months to sell the house,” Kurt says. “In my past home purchases, there was always some kind of hiccup. It was extra stress.”

That’s when their Realtor — also a close friend — suggested Doorifi.

Their agent explained that Doorifi could offer a quick, hassle-free closing and the flexibility to choose their date. At first, Kurt was skeptical.

With their sale secure, they found a beautiful 4,600-square-foot home just a mile away — close enough that Madison didn’t have to change schools. Selling to Doorifi meant they could submit an offer without a home sale contingency, which helped them negotiate a better price on their new home.

“I think we got the price down a little bit more because we were able to close faster,” Kurt says.

Just as important, they skipped the stress of showings and open houses.

“Our neighbors had just sold, and every open house they did, they had to figure out what to do with their dog, they had to keep their house tidy,” Christi says.

Today, the Ohlenbusch family is happily settled in their new home — and while they didn’t get that pool just yet, Christi says, “Maybe one day.”
